Aptitune Corporation - NmonCheck project |
This page was written by a developer. Please pardon the lack of fluff. If you're not familiar with what we do: Aptitune has been building performance analysis tools for UNIX and Linux operating systems for the last 15 years. The thing that sets us apart is the fact that our tool, SarCheck, uses resource utilization data as input, and produces output which is a plain English report, not just an assortment of graphs. We make concrete performance tuning recommendations, explain the reasons for those recommendations, and discuss what we see in English. We try to look at resource monitoring in a different way. Here's what we're building: We're building something similar to our SarCheck performance tool, but it uses nmon data instead of a sar report. The nmon utility was written by IBM's Nigel Griffiths in about the mid-90's and has been available to the public without IBM's official support for roughly 10 years. The brilliance of nmon is its simple output and low overhead. It is much easier to parse than a sar report but the data available seems to depend heavily on the version of AIX and the version of nmon. IBM recently embraced nmon and incorporated it into the topas utility. We'd like to thank Nigel for all of his efforts in creating, nurturing, and supporting nmon. It's a terrific data collector that has finally and officially been blessed by IBM. An example of the output: Here is an example of what NmonCheck's HTML output currently looks like. We're adding features quickly, so your version may not look exactly like this. Please use your browser's "Back" button to return to this page when you're finished looking at this sample NmonCheck report. Please note that the nmon report which was used as the basis for this report is not from a real system. The nmon output of several different systems has been put together to help us test some of NmonCheck's features. We're looking for beta testers: We are looking for beta testers. We'd like SarCheck users to take a look at it first, and the reason for this is the documentation. People in the industry will not be surprised to hear that the documentation has to catch up with the software and so familiarity with SarCheck would be a big plus. Here is the text of the readme file that accompanies the beta software. Use the browser's "Back" button to return to this page. Interested? If you're interested and you're a SarCheck licensee, please contact your sales rep. There's no obligation and we don't need you to sign an NDA. If you can't run beta software in your shop but you're interested in what we're doing, contact us anyway. All we need are CSV formatted data files and we'll run it here. Or we can put you on the list and let you know when we're ready to start shipping. Copyright 2001-2009 Aptitune Corporation, All rights reserved.
