???check™: Automated Analysis of emc navisphere analyzer data

(English text version 0.00.40)

Notes from the developers:

This is simply a prototype of a report. It was computer generated from made up data and only slightly cleaned up by hand. In this particular iteration of the software, we are experimenting with the verbosity and the current setting is what we're thinking would be a good default. A more verbose version of this report would be test050.htm. A less verbose report would be test450.htm.

We are also experimenting with various formats for summary table at the end of the report. It should be obvious that much of the data is nonsense. The algorithms which color the interesting cells of the table are not all working.

This does not look as nice and easy to read as the real product will be. Wording is still cumbersome and merely reflects the current state of the code as we experiment with it. Please send us CSV output from Navisphere Analyzer on a Clariion and we'll be glad to share the output with you.

NOTE: This is a prototype. Data is not real, recommendations are not real, it exists for illustrative purposes only.

This is an analysis of the data contained in the file emcdata11. The data was collected on 08/03/2009, from 05:02:47 to 06:12:47, from the Clariion CX4-480 system 'bigarray'. This array contained 16 disks and 1024 megabytes of cache memory. There were 12 LUNs seen on this array. There were 262 Navisphere Analyzer data records used to produce this analysis.

The date format used in this report is mm/dd/yyyy. In this report, LUNs have been sorted by total I/Os per second. In this report, disks have been sorted by percent busy.

SUMMARY

A change has been recommended to at least one tunable parameter. See the Resource Analysis section for details.

A ???check_parms file was found. None of the defaults used by ???check's rules were overridden by entries in the ???check_parms file.

RECOMMENDATIONS SECTION

All recommendations contained in this report are based solely on the conditions which were present when the performance data was collected. It is possible that conditions which were not present at that time may cause some of these recommendations to result in worse performance. To minimize this risk, analyze data from several different days, implement only regularly occurring recommendations, and implement them one at a time.

Change the page cache size from 8 to 16 kilobytes. This change is recommended because most cachable I/Os are greater than 8kb in size.

Raise the high watermark and low watermark values. No forced flushes were seen during the monitoring period. Raising the watermark values will allow more of the cache to be utilized because there were no bursts that were big enough to cause forced flushing and less of the cache needs to be set aside to absorb bursts.

Consider using RAID level 5 for the LUN named "LUN 2" instead of RAID level 3. RAID level 5 is generally recommended unless there is a specific reason to use a different level.

Consider using RAID level 1 for the LUN named "LUN 8" instead of RAID level 3. RAID 1 may be a reasonable choice for this LUN because low-performance, low-volume I/O was seen. Most "best practices" guides do not recommend RAID 1 groups because they are not expandable but in some cases they may be viable as a cost effective option.

RESOURCE ANALYSIS SECTION - ARRAY

Storage processor activity was reasonably well balanced. The most active storage processor was an average of 19.75 percent busy.

The predominant I/O size on this array was 8 KB. Changing the page cache size to 16 could improve performance because I/Os would not be split into pieces before being cached.

Average storage processor utilization (%busy) was 18.82 percent and average disk utilization (%busy) was 25.18 percent. Both numbers are reasonable and the storage processor utilization is lower. This is expected behavior.

The average LUN write size was 39.40 kilobytes and the average disk write size was 57.79 kilobytes. Coalescing activity can be inferred from the increase in size, and writes may be sequential.

The average arraywide disk (back end) IOPS rate was 7930.7 per second, and this consists of 5557.4 reads and 2373.3 write operations per second. The average arraywide (back end) bandwidth was 497.6 megabytes per second, and this consists of 360.3 megabytes per second of data read and 137.3 megabytes per second of data written.

RESOURCE ANALYSIS SECTION - Storage Processors

Storage processor activity for the SP named "SP A" averaged 19.75 percent and peaked at 23.22 percent from 06:02:47 to 06:12:47. This indicates significant room for growth and shows that the storage processor in not over-utilized. The storage processor queue length averaged 0.315. Service time for this storage processor averaged 0.172 milliseconds and peaked at 0.213 from 05:42:47 to 05:52:47. No forced flushes were seen for the SP named "SP A". The forced flush statistics suggest that the high and low watermark values were reasonable. The total throughput rate for this SP averaged 1181.30 I/Os per second and peaked at 1798.23 from 06:02:47 to 06:12:47.

Storage processor activity for the SP named "SP B" averaged 17.90 percent and peaked at 22.45 percent from 06:02:47 to 06:12:47. This indicates significant room for growth and shows that the storage processor in not over-utilized. The storage processor queue length averaged 0.303. Service time for this storage processor averaged 0.172 milliseconds and peaked at 0.213 from 05:42:47 to 05:52:47. No forced flushes were seen for the SP named "SP B". The rest of the LUNs aren't being displayed to keep the report from being too long and repetitive. To see them, use the -allluns switch. Greater control of this will be coming in the near future.

Notes from the developers:

By default, we will limit the number of disks and LUNs that are reported because a report with 600 disks does not need and can not effectively report on a paragraph for each one. The number of disks and LUNs included in the report can be controlled by the user.

CAPACITY PLANNING SECTION

The section is designed to provide the user with a rudimentary linear capacity planning model and should be used for rough approximations only. These estimates assume that an increase in workload will affect the usage of all resources equally. These estimates should be used on days when the load is heaviest to determine approximately how much spare capacity remains at peak times.

Based on the data available, the system should be able to support approximately a 68 percent increase in workload at peak times before the first resource bottleneck affects performance or reliability, and that bottleneck is likely to be disk utilization (%busy). See the following paragraphs for additional information.

The storage processors can support an increase in workload of at least 100 percent at peak times. The busiest Storage Processor was SP A and at its peak, it was 23.22 percent busy. The threshold for this resource is set to 70 percent busy.

The busiest disk drive can support an increase in workload of approximately 68 percent at peak times. The busiest disk drive was Bus 0 Enclosure 1 Disk 3 and at its peak, it was 41.73 percent busy. The threshold for this resource is set to 70 percent busy.

This array can support can support a very large increase in the number of disk drives that can be supported. There were 16 disk drives seen and this array can support up to 480 disks.

This array can support can support a very large increase in the number of LUNs that can be supported. There were 12 LUNs seen and this array can support up to 4096 LUNs.
